Comments / pictures

Bombay, born in India in 1932, had arrived in Milan immediately after her birth where, except for the period of the Allied bombings of 43-45 when it was moved to the Monza Park, she always lived in the zoo until 1987 when she died, to come then embalmed and still exhibited today in one of the beautiful dioramas (dedicated to the nature of the Kaziranga National Park in north-western India) of the Natural History Museum of the same Public Gardens. What was not embalmed was burned and the dust collected in a large funeral urn bearing the inscription: "'the ashes of Bombay"; the urn was placed in the cage where the elephant had lived for over 50 years. Beside her a photo and always fresh flowers.
