Luggard was born wild at Tsavo National Park.
He was just shy of five months old when rescued; a bullet having shattered the femur of his back right leg, while another had gone through his back left foot. The horrendous leg injury left him with a profound limp. The trauma from being shot had a lasting impact on his body and he suffered from occasional flareups to his injured leg. In the weeks leading up to his death, his physical condition deteriorated too.
