The calf had broken free from the herd and rushed into the construction site and was soon followed by its mother and another male elephant. All three had fallen into a pit at the site. While the male elephant was able to get out safely, the calf and its mother remained stuck there, as reported by PTI.

The calf was sent to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation at the Kaziranga National Park in the state. Despite efforts to save the female elephant, she died painfully on Wednesday night.
