Lena and Bierma arrived at Chester Zoo in June 1986 after eight years together at the Aalborg Zoo in Denmark. They were kept at Chester Zoo, at the request of Belfast Zoo, for approximately two years, while a new elephant house was being built for them at Belfast Zoo. Both elephants were transferred to Belfast Zoo in March 1988. Bierma died six months later. Her name is listed as Lena in the European Asian Elephant Studbook.
