Comments / pictures

This picture is dated 1960. Seems that I recall Big John having several elephants over the years, always using the name "Nena". If so this might not be the one with Kelly-Miller today. "This was in the good old days before Political Correctness."

Having spent from 1976 thru the end of the 1981 season of Big John's show, I can tell you that he had 2 elephants, both named Neena (not Nena). If I remember the story that Big John told me the name Neena was chosen as a "name the elephant" contest for school kids. This photo you have is of the first one; the second one is the one that is part of the KM Herd. I worked her (2nd Neena) one winter on Betty Wendany's little sidewall school show, and took care of her for a couple of winters. //Bill Schreiber

John Strong had a one ring Circus on the west coast for years. Known as the Big John Strong Show. His son still has a side show out of Texas. Nina is spelled Neena. There have been three of them with the one on C&B now being the last one. All were on the Big John Strong show thus the name was never changed and people didn't realize the elephant had changed. This isn't 100% complete especially dealing with the 1st one but there is no doubt there has been three of them.
