Comments / pictures

At the age of seven months, she was brought from her birth place, a logging camp in Thailand, to the U. S. and delivered to the Phoenix Zoo.
In the fall of 1995, Ruby was sent to the Tulsa (OK) Zoo where she stayed for two years. During that time she bred with Tulsa's Asian male, Sneezy.
In the last days of October, Ruby showed signs of entering labor. But nothing happened, and on October 31, a surgical exam revealed that the baby was dead.
Ruby, managed in protected contact, and pregant for her first time was euthanized at the 6th of November due to complications undergoing an surgery c-section.
Ruby's surgery began at appoximately 11:30am by the assembled veterinarians. Through the surgery, a 321 lb calf was removed through the incision. It was found that the Uterus had ruptured and that the calf was in the abdominal cavity, outside of the uterus, hence our inability to remove it via episiotomy. Upon closer examination of the uterus, the tears were too large and too infected to repair. Ruby was euthanized at approximately 12:50pm. It was estimated that the calf had been dead 2 weeks, at about the onset of first labor signs, and that there was possible uterine infection or disease prior to that.
