Description

The Crystal Palace, located at Hyde Park, in London, United Kingdom .

Comments / pictures1972: Queen Elizabeth II was sent a seven-year-old bull elephant called Jumbo, from the President of Cameroon, Ahmadou Ahidjo, to mark the Queen’s Silver wedding anniversary.

The six and half year old male African forest elephant Jumbo III was presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Cameroon government in December 1972. He was originally kept at the Crystal Palace, though he did much damage to his quarters. He was transferred to the London Zoo and kept at the Cotton Terraces rather than the rhino and elephant yards before his transfer to the Whipsnade Zoo.
