Comments / picturesJohn Maurice of Orange was was appointed as the governor of the Dutch possessions in Brazil in 1636 by the Dutch West India Company on recommendation of Frederick Henry. he built the Vrijhof palace 1640. Close to the palace John Maurice founded a zoo with exotic animals in an open park, where Albert Eckhout, made a chalk drawing of a young African forest elephant with Tusks.
