He was of Turko-Mongol Timurid descent, the son of Humayun, and the grandson of Babur who founded the dynasty.

The victory at the Second Battle of Panipat left Akbar with over 1,500 war elephants which he used to re-engage Sikandar Shah at the siege of Mankot.
