Dusit Zoo, popularly known as Khao Din Wana, was built by King Rama V and was originally a private garden with wild deer from Java.

King Rama V, opened to the public in 1938. It has an area of 47 acres which includes 12 acres of lakes.

2018: On Aug 31, the 80-year-old national institution will shut its gates for good. Its 1,000-plus animals will be relocated temporarily to six public zoos for three years until the construction of a new zoo. Before closing in 2018, Dusit Zoo relocated its own elephants, but rented 3 elephants from Ayutthaya royal kraal. The previous bullcage and enclosure is used by camels.
