1949: Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of India presented Ueno Zoo with an elephant named after his daughter, Indira, in 1949. In a letter he sent to the children of Tokyo, Prime Minister Nehru said, “Indira is a fine elephant, very well-behaved. . . I hope that when the children of India and the children of Japan will grow up, they will serve not only their great countries, but also the cause of peace and cooperation all over Asia and the world. So you must look upon this elephant, Indira by name, as a messenger of affection and goodwill from the children of India . . . ”

1983-08-11: Indira, a female elephant presented to Japan by the late Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and named after his daughter, now India\'s prime minister, died at Tokyo\'s Ueno Zoo today, zoo officials said.

2002: It is now home to the fourth and latest elephant, 7-year-old female Surya, as well as another two elephants also given to Japan by India.

2005: "At the Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo\'s Taito Ward, a zookeeper was killed in December 2005 by a blow to the head from an Asian elephant\'s tusk."
