Born 1921-11-23 in Switzerland dead 1997-08-18 in Switzerland , son of director Friedrich Knie and director Margrit Lippuner .

Growing up on his parents circus, he learned elephant training from Franz Kraml, and is mostly associated with this profession, but also others.

In 1956, Rolf Knie had seven young African elephants in the ring, five of them on loan from Basel Zoo.
