females are worked free contact while the the bull is worked protected contact. The elephants are bathed daily in large pool , and walked thru zoo 2 times/day , pictures with elehants are offered on the weekends.
First calf born at the zoo in April of 1998 unfortunately was stillborn. Second female pregnant and due summer of 1999. Facility was recently renovated and enlarged to include a large bull pen and barn, maternity stall, and stalls to accomodate females from outside facilities for breeding.
At September 13, 1999 the Pittsburgh Zoo celebrated the birth of a female baby elephant, the first successful elephant birth in the Zoo's 101-year history. The birth is equally celebrated by zoos throughout the country because this is the first captive-born African elephant in North America to successfully give birth at a zoo.
