There are 5 elephant keepers.
Elephant Manager: Heidi Fuciarelli, 35, Staff: Denise Luckey 31, Kim Rutkowski 27, Michael Wauhop 40, Jill McClung 23.We have 2 African cows that arrived at about the age of 3. They have about 1/10 an acre outside yard with a pool. They are in a free contact situation, however, only zoo animal staff are allowed to enter the room. There must be 2 trainers present to enter the room. They have free access in and out if the night temps are above 50 degrees F. If they are lower, then they are locked inside the heated building, but are not chained. They have access to 2 rooms. They share the building with white rhinos and Baird's tapirs. We are in the process of expanding the zoo, which will give us a new elephant exhibit, among other things. The new exhibit will be 2 acres and allow the addition of one or possibly two more elephants. "Monica" is the dominant elephant of the 2. She has only a single tusk, which she keeps worn or broken down to where it never protrudes from her lip more than a few inches.
