Description of this book
The "egotists" in the title refer to the prominent men—zoo directors, board members, and politicians—whose personal ambitions and conflicts often dictated the welfare of the Animals. Samorn (the Protagonist): A female elephant gifted by the Thai government in 1956. She lived at the Adelaide Zoo for 35 years before being moved to the Monarto Open Range Zoo in 1991, where she tragically died after falling into a Moat in 1994. Samorn, the Adelaide Zoos last elephant, was adored by generations of zoo visitors. A gift from the Thai government in 1956, she was transferred thirty-five years later to Monarto Zoo to live out her days. When she died there in 1994 there was an outpouring of sadness from all who knew or grew up with her.

Elephants and Egotists is a tribute to Samorn, but also tells of other Elephants sent to South Australia and the colourful characters who decided their fate. The book also documents Samorns predecessors at the zoo: Miss Siam, Siriri, and Lillian. Sumerling details the often contentious relationship between the Adelaide Zoo Board and the staff, including Hero Nuus, a dedicated keeper who had a unique one-to-one relationship with Samorn during a critical period, and Andrew Mann, another keeper who cared for Samorn during her later years at Monarto.

The highlight of a visit to the Adelaide Zoo was a ride in Samorn's cart. To the right is elephant keeper Hero Nuus.
