1996: Population 1996 estimated to 200-250 (Santiapillai, IUCN 1996)
The human population explosion sparked intense competition for land and conflicts with elephants, which now live only in isolated areas. A lack of active conservation projects makes Bangladeshs elephants highly threatened.
2004: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Bangladesh conducted a survey on elephants in Bangladesh in 2004 that found 239 mammals, while another 83 in captive.
2010: The IUCN enlisted the biggest mammals in the forest as critically endangered in 2010. Some 83 to 100 migratory elephants occasionally cross the border. Besides, there are 38 male and 56 female captive elephants used in logging and circus.
2016: Current study found 268 resident wild elephants, 93 migratory elephants and 96 captive
elephants in Bangladesh.
