1939: At the beginning of WW2 there was about 20 elephants in Japan.
1945: Only two elephants survived the war.
2009: 12 African elephants were born in Japan so far, in five different zoos:
Gunma, Hyogo, Tokyo (Tama), Iwate and Ehime.
2009: The Asian population at December 31 was 14.50 = 64 asian elephants.
2013-02-29: At present there are 73 Asian elephants at 37 facilities in Japan. Of these, 8 elephants are from Sri Lanka.
