Comments / pictures

A gift from Portugal to hole roman emperor Maximilian of Austria, this eight year old Asian elephant arrived a port in Zeeland in September 1563, and was walked from there to Antwerp where it was popular with artists who made drawings and paintings.

Due to its long stay in the Lowlands this elephant is referred to as "Antwerp elephant". On its way to Vienna it was shown in Brussel 1563, reaching Cologne 10th of October, evidently reaching Ebersdorf in Vienna before the winter.

On his return from Poland, Henry III of France were shown an elephant at Ebersdorf in 1574.
