After the Spanish conquest of Portugal in 1580, on the occasion of becoming king of Portugal, Philip II of Span received an Asian elephant in 1581 as a gift from Lisbon.

The elephant and a one horned rhino, being shipped from the port in Old Goa in India, to Port of Lisbon in Portugal, were on display in Madrid, and later kept at the kings menagerie.
