1959: In 1959, Oxford engineering student John Hoyte borrowed a 5,700-pound female Indian elephant named Jumbo from the Turin Zoo and walked her across the Mount Cenis Pass. The Turin Zoo had just acquired the female Asian elephant, Jumbo, who was trained as a circus animal. The owner of the zoo volunteered Jumbo and Ernesto Gobold, the elephant's trainer from Turin, and became the first sponsor of the expedition.
