2009-09-07: Two tuskers ran amok and blocked traffic on the NH-47 between Marathakkara, near here, and Chalakkudy for over 2 hours on Sunday. The incident created panic among the passengers who were stuck in various vehicles on the highway. Elephants Mahadevan and Ayyappan, both owned by Uttoli Krishnankutty, ran amok while being taken through the NH-47 from Marathakkara to the residence of the owner at Amballur. Though the mahouts managed to chain Mahadevan, the other Tusker could not be brought under control. A frenzied Ayyappan attacked a private bus on the highway which was packed with passengers. However, the bus driver’s timely action of accelerating the bus when the Tusker attacked saved the bus and the passengers. Though the elephant tried to attack its Mahout he managed to escape unhurt. Eyewitness say that the efforts by Salish, the mahout, to drive the elephant to a compound at Amballur saved the vehicles and passengers on the highway from its attack. The Mahout reportedly diverted the elephant’s attention and attracted it towards him by running in front of it for around 4 km through the highway. Finally, the elephant was chained when it reached the compound at Amballur. Thousands of vehicles to and from Ernakulam were forced to halt for more than two hours on the NH. http://www.newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/article149257.ece#.UvN237SYVZI
