Comments / pictures

Rio's second zoo, was located in Vila Isabel until it was closed in the 1940s.

The first elephant held there was Bosco, a male Indian elephant which most likely came from the wild. He died in 1893 and was sent to the National Museum by the baron of Drummond, his owner. I believe we will not know anything about him so easily because his remains were likely destroyed after the fire which hit the museum in 2018.

Enzo Henriques

"Mr. baron of Drummond ceded to the National Museum the skin and Skeleton of Bosco, the elephant, died at our zoo a couple of days ago. The animal in question was of the Indian Species (Elephas indicus) and with the African specimen (Elephas africanus) already held by the museum, make the sole existing. two Species of elephant represented."
