In November 1977, the Los Angeles Zoo acquired two six year old African elephants from Jurgen Schulz. They were sold together to the Shoushan Zoo two years later. In Taiwan, the two calves were mistaken for a male and female, not to be discovered until 2007. In 2002, a "wedding" was held for the two. Ali weighed five tonnes and was larger, stronger and more violent than the Annie.
