In June 1947, Howard Bary docked in Bronx, New York, with an African forest elephant for Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. He had spent several months in the Belgian Congo as an agent for the show. Two elephants were originally acquired and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, however one died four days prior to arrival in America on 22 June 1947.
