When 308 pound Malti was born at the Calgary Zoo, she was the second calf for her 17 year old mother Maharani and 26 years old father Spike. She was a full F2 generation, meaning both of her parents were born in captivity. The first calf born to the pair was rejected at birth and died 3 weeks later of infections. Malti, a Hindi name, means moonlight, to be brilliant, or small fragrant flower. At eleven months old she weighed in at 849 pounds. In late October 2008, the 14 month old calf was diagnosed with the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes virus. She died six days later. At the time of Maltis death only four elephants were known to have experienced symptoms of the disease and recovered.
