Several newspapers carried reports, around 17th December 1949, about a '3 ton' elephant called Tarka 'believed to have been worth £3,000' 'who went mad on a train' and 'died in a hail of bullets from a bren gun' The elephant was 'cut up by a local firm of horse meat suppliers' resulting in further headlines 'Tarka goes to the Dogs' and 'Elephant's Eye for University Research
