In June 1988, the Emmen Zoo imported seven Asian elephants from Burma. These seven would form the heart of the herd to later birth many calves.

In February 2010, keepers found Swe San Thay dead in the barn during morning inspections. No apparent cause of death of found preceding necropsy.

Swe San Thay means "golden abundance" in Burmese.
