M. Philip Kahl and Charles Santiapillai, Gajah Elephant Glossary, Gajah nr 23 (2004), Journal for Asian Elephant Specialist Group

Imobilization of elephants is performed through Anesthesia with "Large Animal Imobilone" (LAI) which includes the highly potent ingridient Etorphine, sometimes called M99, combined with Rompune (Xylazine).

Anesthesia of elephants is not without risks, and the risk for complications increase if the animal is old, sick, in bad condition, or under stress, why it should be performed only when really needed. Still, its very useful and during the last decennia the veterinarian knowledge and experience have increased, and risks for complications have been reduced.
