Sepsis or septicemia, previously commonly referred to as blood poisoning, is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body's response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs. This initial stage is followed by suppression of the immune system. Common signs and symptoms include fever, increased

infection. The terms "septicemia" and "blood poisoning" have been used in various ways and are no longer recommended. (Wikipedia)
From Biology, Medicine, and Surgery of Elephants, 2006 by Murray Fowler, Susan K. Mikota
Pasteurellosis (hemorrhagic septicemia) refers to a variety of localized and/or systemic diseases, frequently involving the respiratory system. The organisms have worldwide distribution and may be found as part of the normal flora of many animals.
The tendency of abscesses to spread beneath the skin may have serious consequences. Infection may progress (often undetected) for months, resulting in necrotizing
fasciitis, sepsis, and death. This is most likely to occur in situations where initial diagnosis and treatment have been delayed.
Sepsis may rapidly cause erosion and destruction of the joint cartilage.

Bubonic plague is characterized by enlarged draining lymph nodes (buboes) and results in sepsis and death if not treated.
