Until then, it was a provision shop run by their father, Velupillai, which kept the family going. For Shakunthalamma, their mother, the elephants were an extended family.

In 1996, the elephants of Mangalamkunnu brothers were the main attraction in the Miss Universe competition organised by Amitabh Bachan in Bangalore.

The brothers used to be the largest individual owner in Kerala, after the Guruvayur Devaswom. From 18 elephants, they have begun to reduce their Herd which now stands at 10 (2021).

2024: Popular Tusker Mangalamkunnu Ayyappan, 55, 55, died at Mangalamkunnu in Palakkad on Monday. The elephant owned by M A Haridasan had been under treatment for the past few months.
