Lothar Dittrich (* 20. April 1932 in Magdeburg; † 6. August 2021 in Hannover) was a German Zoologist and Zoo Director.

Lothar Dittrich was born in Magdeburg as the son of the administrative Oberfeldwebels Walter Dittrich and his wife Luise, b. Judge born. After visiting the Volksschule in Grimma from 1938 to 1942 and the Fürsten- und Landesschule St. Augustin in Grimma from 1942 to 1950 he studied biology and parasitology at the University of Leipzig after graduating until 1955 . 1960 promoted to Dr. rer. nat. on milk tooth development and tooth change in brown bears (Ursus arctos L.) and other Ursids . [1]

In 1954, at the request of the director Karl Max Schneider , he initially went unpaid, from 1955 on a paid job as an assistant at the Zoo Leipzig . Since the year he was married to Siegrid , with whom he had two children. In 1958 he was appointed deputy director of the zoo. In April 1961, the family left the GDR and relocated to the Federal Republic of Germany for political reasons .

The first animal caretaker in the headquarters of the animal trade company Ludwig Ruhe in Alfeld (Leine) , he became the zoological technical director in 1961 of the zoo Hanover, which has been leased from this animal trade since 1931 . After this new takeover by the city administration of Hanover in 1972, he headed this zoo as director.

Since 1970 he has been a teaching assistant for zoo biology at the University of Hanover and was appointed honorary professor in 1979. In 1993, he finished his teaching career.

In 1993 he left the Hanover Zoo at his own request and devoted himself to scientific work.

On the basis of the data material and his scientific evaluation of mammals bred at the Hanover Zoo, he wrote on topics related to reproductive biology and Juvenile development, especially of crustaceans and predators. They have been published in magazines such as Der Zoologische Garten , International Zoo Yearbook , Zeitschrift für Säugetierkunde or Säugetierkundliche Mitteilungen.
