Patricia Sumerling is an award-winning professional historian and author based in Adelaide, South Australia. She has spent over 30 years researching and writing about South Australia's built heritage, social history, and "unresolved tales. She holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Adelaide and an MA from Flinders University. She is an active member of the Historical Society of South Australia and various local heritage societies.

As a professional historian based in Adelaide, she has built a career documenting the birth and life records of others—from early South Australian pioneers to the famous Elephants of the Adelaide Zoo. Her Research often utilizes official genealogy and birth registrations to reconstruct the social history of the region.

Her expertise includes pub and hotel history, urban development, and biographies of colorful South Australian characters.
She was named the 2013 South Australian Historian of the Year by the History Council of South Australia for her work in heritage awareness and public communication after serving as a historian for the Adelaide City Council for six years.

Her book Elephants and Egotists (2016): won the Maurice Keian Award for the best book on South Australian history.
