Professor Julius Kühn (1825–1910) was a pioneering German agronomist and academic at the University of Halle. Kühn established a pet garden (Haustiergarten) and experimental stables at the University of Halle, where he conducted cross-breeding experiments with domestic and wild Animals to improve livestock, and he is considered the founder of modern agricultural sciences in Germany, having established the first independent Research institute for the subject in 1863.

In 1899, he was part of the influential circle that planned the creation of the Zoologischer Garten Halle (Halle Zoo or Berg-Zoo), which eventually opened in 1901.

Kühn is famously praised by Carl Hagenbeck for his expertise in animal acclimatization and breeding:

Records about Julius Kühn from the book Beasts and Men, by Carl Hagenbeck
I have already related the failure of my attempts at bringing home some of the giant wild sheep of Central Asia. It was suggested to me by Professor Kiihn of Halle that I should endeavour to cross these with domestic sheep ; but unfortunately the experiment has not yet proved practicable.

The book Beasts and Men, written 1909 by Carl Hagenbeck
