Biography details

Jean Baptiste Théodore Rancy , circus director in France

Born 1818-07-23 in France dead 1892-06-04 in France .

Jean Baptiste Théodore, known as Théodore Rancy, was the son of Jean Dominique Ranz, known as Jouany Rancy (born in 1784 in Trento) and Sabine Avarini Carix , both rope dancers.

Théodore Rancy was born in Chalais on July 23, 1818. He had three brothers: Joseph, born in 1806, Grégoire, born in 1809, and Alexandre, born in 1822. He also had two sisters, both of whom died at a young age.

At the age of fifteen, he left his family and set off on an adventure with the wind. Associated with Fortuné Lalanne, he rented the Cirque Saint-Sever in Rouen. The Lalanne-Rancy Circus gave its first performance on December 15, 1855. Théodore Rancy, the following year, purchased an umbrella (a single-pole marquee) and undertook his first tour on his own.
