Biography details

Stephen Robert Irwin , zoo director in Australia

Born 1962-02-22 in Australia dead 2006-09-04 in Australia , son of director Bob Irwin and assistant director Lyn Irwin .

Stephen Irwin (22 February 1962 – 4 September 2006), nicknamed "The Crocodile Hunter", was an Australian zookeeper, conservationist, television personality, wildlife expert and environmentalist.

When Irwin was still a child, his family moved to Beerwah near Queensland, Australia, opening in 1970 the Beerwah Reptile Park. Steve spent his formative years managing the park, including feeding the animals, and eventually became its owner.

He achieved worldwide fame from the television series The Crocodile Hunter (1996–2007), an internationally broadcast wildlife documentary series that he co-hosted with his wife Terri.

Although Steve Irwin was the undisputed star of Crocodile Hunter his family – including his wife Terri – played an important role in the series. Like her husband, Terri soon discovered her love of animals. She was born in Eugene, Oregon, where her family ran a freight forwarding business and her father regularly brought injured animals that he had met on the street. In 1986, Terri Cougar Country opened, a facility that helped rehabilitate foxes, raccoons, bobcats, bears, and of course, pumas and release them back into the wild.

In 1991, Terri traveled to Australia and visited Australia Zoo, where she saw Steve during one of his crocodile shows for the first time. The couple got engaged just four months later.

The couple also hosted the series Croc Files (1999–2001), The Crocodile Hunter Diaries (2002–2006), and New Breed Vets (2005). They also co-owned and operated Australia Zoo, founded by Irwin's parents in Beerwah, about 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of the Queensland state capital of Brisbane.

Steve and Terri Irwin had two children, Bindi Irwin and Robert Irwin.

In 2006, while filming a documentary in Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Irwin died after being pierced in the chest by a short-tail stingray.
