Thomas Saunders elephant keeper, Great Philadelphia Zoological Garden (Raymond & Waring). Was knocked from his horse and killed by the elephant Pizarro while on the road about 5 miles north of Baton Rouge LA, on the way to Bayou Sara. A wagon was sent back to Baton Rouge and a dozen soldiers from Pentagon Barracks brought to the scene. They quieted the elephant by peppering him with 22 musket balls.
