James Freeman was a trapeze artist, tightrope walker and clown, among other roles.
He was considered the most versatile of all British circus performers in his heyday and as a clown under the name 'Pimpo' he was one of the country's most popular jesters.

He rose to fame at George Sanger's Circus in the 1930s and 1940s. In "A Perfect Holiday", essayist EV Lucas describes Pimpo's performance, which apparently included acrobatic and animal training skills, as well as more conventional clown techniques. .

In 1917 he married Victoria Sanger Freeman.
James Freeman died in 1961 in Brixtol where he peacefully spent his last days.
