Comments / pictures1630: The elephant Don Diego arrived to the palace in May 1630, confirmed by the diarist Giacinto Gigli (1594-1671), who records the arrival of the elephant: In that month [May 1630], an elephant was brought to Rome,an animal which had not been seen there for a hundred years, not since one wassent as a gift from the King of Portugal to Pope Leo X in 1514 (Hanno, who was born in Southern India sometime around1510, shipped to Lisbon, and dispatched to Rome in 1513 as a gift to the newly elected pope; he died in Rome in 1517, at the age of seven)

The artist Nicolas Poussin made a painting called Poussins Elephant, making him the elephant of Hannibal.
