Comments / picturesThe zoo is located in Tennoji Park, southwest of the Shitenno-ji Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan.

2026-03-12: The rare Malaysian elephants (a subspecies of the Asian elephant) have arrived at Tennoji Zoo on a breeding loan from Taiping Zoo & Night Safari in Malaysia. The three elephants are a male named Kelat (20 years old) and three females named Dara (14 years old) and Amoy/Amoi (9 years old). According to Tennoji Zoo, they are scheduled to be introduced to the public sometime in April after approximately 30 days of quarantine and acclimatization to the facility.

Tennoji Zoo has been without elephants since Rani Hiroko (female, estimated 48 years old) died in January 2018, making this visit the first elephant in approximately eight years.

Zoo director Takeshi Mukai said, "It took a total of 3 years and 10 months to bring them in. I am deeply moved when I think of the efforts of all the predecessors who have worked so hard up until now. Elephants are popular animals, but they are also animals that are endangered. These Malaysian elephants are precious elephants that are said to be a treasure of Malaysia. We want to create an environment where the three of them can live safely and securely. I think the new elephant enclosure will be one of the largest elephant enclosures in Japan, and in the future we would like to aim for breeding and create a Herd of female elephants."
