Founded by Gerry Cottles and his wife Betty Fossett. They had three daughters, who followed their mother into the ring, and a son, Gerry Jr.

Gerry Cottle was 15 when he ran away to the circus in 1961. His father loaned him £60 to get started and some while later, he teamed up with a friend, Brian Austen, to form Cottle Austen Circus in 1970, which in 1974 was split in Austen Brothers Circus and Gerry Cottles Circus.

In late seventies the elephants were trained by Marcel Peters, wo also joined them to Circo Mundial.

Gerry Cottle Sr now runs Wookey Hole Caves, Wookey Hole, Wells, in Somerset, UK.
