James William Bostock had been born on 20th April 1814, his parents were John and Mary Bostock, a farming family from Leek in Staffordshire. James William died in 1878 at Farnham, and is buried at Leek.

He left home at 18 when his father remarried. Being able-bodied, over six Feet tall, and knowledgeable with horses, he obtained employment, at 24, as a waggoner in Wombwell's, later Mrs. Edmond's, menagerie. For 19 years from 1848 he was contracting and advertising agent for the menagerie. He obtained royal commands to exhibit the menagerie at Windsor in 1847 and 1854.

In 1867 he left Mrs. Edmond's service and set up business on his own with a travelling menagerie.

After his death the menagerie passed to his widow. It was later purchased from her by her son Edward Henry. See his record.

He fell in love with the proprietor's niece, waited 18 years for her, and as she became the proprietor he made it his business.
