In June 1979. Kenneth Berry, accompanied by a neighbor, found his father’s mangled body next to an elephant who was chained to a tree at the Woodland area property.

The six-ton bull elephant named Buddha that trampled Berry eventually was euthanized. Kenneth Berry told a reporter in 1979 that it was a painful decision to euthanize Buddha, whom he had known from when it was just six months old.

Later, four of Berry’s remaining elephants were sold to American zoos. Three were sold to ABC television network, which sent them to a game preserve in Africa, where they appeared on a television show in 1981.
