Named Motty after George Mottershead, who founded Chester Zoo in 1930, when he brought his family to live in Oakfield House at Upton-by-Chester in Cheshire. (Paul A. Rees)

Motty was thought in the past, to be the only crossbreed ever between African and Asian elephant. More recent Research indicate that the The straight-tusked elephant (Palaeoloxodon antiquus), an extinct elephant whose closest extant relative is the African forest elephant, interbred with the Asian elephant, as recovered DNA has shown (Callaway, se sources below).
