Born ? , son of artist Pat Freeman .

Victoria and James Freeman had a son, Pat Freeman, who followed the family footsteps as a clown. He died at an early age while performing in a circus in Switzerland, but his sons Peter Freeman and Mike Sanger Freeman continued as animals trainers.


Mike Sanger was born into a sixth-generation circus family; his great-great-great grandfather was ‘Lord’ George Sanger, the celebrated Victorian showman. Mike’s early career entailed horse training with Circus Krone in Germany, and at twenty-seven he decided to revive the dog act that his father had made famous internationally under the name of ‘Old Regnas’ (Regnas being the inversion of Sanger). He has taken his act to many stages; worked in most branches of show business, including films and television shows worldwide. Amongst his numerous famous audience members are Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Sean Connery and Cary Grant, and HRH Hassan II – the King of Morocco. Mike lives with his wife Pascale and seven dogs in Normandy France. He continues to train and perform.

My specialty is not elephants, however, after a lifetime of working in different circuses, over the years I have observed different behavior patterns. In the 1970s in Germany I saw that a way of keeping everything under tight control caused a certain nervous attitude that could turn dangerous. On the other hand I was with an Italian show that kept 2 Elephants that were allowed a lot of freedom. In fact one town we went to on a no performance day, the boss of the show, who was also their trainer let the elephants loose in a fenced in adjoining field and promptly left the ground to spend a day in the mountains with his family. When he arrived back in the evening he called the elephants to him and walked them calmly back to the stable. As far as I know these elephants never caused any problems and showed no stress related behavior.
