For eighteen months, Pearl and Carolyn were sent on breeding loan to breed with the Dickerson Park Zoo's dominant bull Onyx. While both came back pregnant, only Pearl carried her calf to term, Onyx's only male calf to live past the age of three.

Pyelonephritis was proximal cause of death (a young elephant)
Mild Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) Left scapulohumeral (shoulder) joint with a more moderate DJD left elbow
Left coxofemoral joint (hip) had severe DJD.
Left stifle (knee) showed severe DJD, erosion of half of the kneecap, femur and tibia
