Performing Animal Welfare Society / ARK 2000 (PAWS), located in San Andreas, in United States, was founded in 2000 and the first elephant arrived in 2002.
At Performing Animal Welfare Society / ARK 2000 (PAWS) lives 8 elephants with records in this database: (detail list)
Founded by Pat Derby and Ed Stewart in 1984, the 30 acre PAWS Galt facility housed Asian and African elephants, lions, bears, wolves, tigers, leopards. Eventually, all the surviving elephants would be transferred to a new 2300 acre compound near San Andreas known as ARK 2000. A $2.5 million budget funded by corporate donors and private individuals keeps the location operating.
In the summer, the Star reported that a lab test showed a PAWS elephant tested positive for TB. That animal had already been in quarantine for more than three years, PAWS co-owner Pat Derby said at the time. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also found that two other elephants that died at PAWS within the past two years also tested positive for TB, according to necropsy reports. PAWS says the cause of death in both cases was not TB, but arthritis.
