The Indianapolis Zoo is a zoo located in White River State Park, in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States, housing more than 3,800 animals of more than 320 species and subspecies. The institution is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the American Alliance of Museums as a zoo, an aquarium, and as a botanical garden. The zoo is a private non-profit organization, receiving no tax support and is supported entirely by membership fees, admissions, donations, sales, grants, and an annual fundraiser.

The zoo hosts more than a million visitors each year and plays a role in worldwide conservation and research

2003: The accomplished the world's first successful artificial insemination of an African elephant, resulting in the birth of Kedar in 2005.

2019: Two elephants in 2019 died at the Indianapolis Zoo due to an outbreak of Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus, or EEHV, Hemorrhagic Disease — a disease that previously was thought to affect mainly Asian elephants.

2020-10-08: 2020-10-08: Zoo officials said they made "the difficult decision" to euthanize 52 year old African elephant Sophi, after her condition declined over the last few days. Sophi was born in 1968 and came to Indianapolis from a Lion Safari safari park in Canada in 1989.
