The austrian emperor Maximillian II von Habsburg founded a menagerie in 1552 at the castle of Kaiserebersdorf.

Among other animals were here kept the first elephant in Austria, Suleiman.

The animal collection was later moved to Vienna Zoo in Schönbrunn.
