The staff named the baby Dohani, Swahili for “smoke,” in honor of his father, Smokey, who lived at the Oakland Zoo until he died of chronic wasting disease earlier that year.

The northamerican studbook for african elephants list Dohani as dead 9th of September 2001. An online news article however, stated at September 5, 2001:

Dohani was found dead at 7:15 Sunday morning. He died from a blow to the chest from his mother's tusk. He suffered two broken ribs and a deep puncture to his chest, said Joel Parrott, executive director for the zoo.

(Sunday was 2nd of September 2001)
