Toured in sweden and Finland during the 80´s with Circus Scott and Circus Finlandia, and in Norway with Circus Arnardo during the 90´s.

Married to Chiara Chiara Medini-Gärtner, who was killed by one of the elephants in 1982. In his second marriage Josef became father to Silvia Gärtner, Claudio Gärtner, Joy Gärtner, Christian Gärtner, Alex Gärtner and Sonny Gärtner.
